Staying Present in the Classroom
It's no secret that staying focused in class can be challenging. Maybe you catch yourself scrolling through social media, stressing about tuition or bills, replaying a conversation with a roommate, or thinking about the long list of assignments waiting after class.
It's not that you don't care about your coursework. It's that life does not pause just because you step into a classroom.
Still, your education is an investment of time, energy, and money. The question is: how do you truly benefit from that investment?
That's where Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) skills can help. ACT is not about "fixing" you or forcing you to pay attention. Instead, it is about developing tools that help you stay engaged, present, and connected to what matters most.
Sometimes that means tuning into a lecture. Sometimes it means noticing when your thoughts drift to worries about grades, finances, or the future, and then gently bringing yourself back with intention.
These tools are not only for students who feel like they are struggling. They are useful for anyone who wants to find meaning in their academic journey and take actions that reflect their long-term values.
By practicing these skills, you will be able to answer common questions like: "why am I here?" and "what am I doing?" with clarity and confidence.
Dropping Anchor
Our minds wander all the time. During a lecture, you might drift into daydreams, stress about your upcoming exam, or replay an earlier conversation with a professor. When your attention slips, it can feel like you've lost the thread and it's not worth trying to get it back.
The Dropping Anchor technique is a quick way to bring your physical self back. It helps you notice what is happening inside you without getting caught in it, and then shift your focus to the present moment. It takes less than a minute and can be done anytime, anywhere.
Here's how it works:
Acknowledge: Pause and notice what is happening in your mind and body. What thoughts are running through your head? Do you feel tension in your shoulders, chest, or jaw? Just observe without judgment or trying to change anything.
Connect: Redirect your attention to your body with a small physical action. Press your feet into the ground, roll your shoulders back, or squeeze your hands together for 30 seconds. These simple movements help shift your focus from your thoughts to your physical presence.
Engage: Turn your attention back to what you are doing. If you're taking notes, notice the movement of your pen or keyboard. If you're listening to a lecture, tune in fully to the speaker's voice.
Acknowledge. Connect. Engage. Three steps, thirty seconds.
Reflection Prompt: Think about the last time you lost focus in class or while studying. What made you lose focus? How might using "acknowledge, connect, engage" have helped you re-engage?
Key Takeaways:
• Your mind will wander. That's normal.
• Dropping Anchor gives you a way to notice thoughts without getting stuck in them.
• With practice, it becomes easier to return to the present moment.
Why Do We Get Distracted?
Distractions in college do not always come from outside the classroom. Phones, roommates, or side conversations can grab our attention, but often the most powerful distractions come from our own minds. Unhelpful thoughts can pull you away from lectures, readings, or projects, leaving you disconnected from your learning.
